How to create success in 2023

Do you believe you can create success, or is it just down to luck?

You might go all in, try everything you can, all at the same time. That is bound to create the result you want. But how can you repeat it if you don't know how you reached the successful outcome?

That is how I define luck: Being unable to specifically explain how you reached the successful outcome.

Everyone is in a rush for overnight success, or the next viral piece of content but that is not the right approach.

You need to be patient. Experiment. Find what works. Then when you achieve the result, ride the wave of momentum by replicating what worked again and again.

So how do you start this wave? How do you create success in 2023?

It begins with prioritizing you.

When I say prioritize you, I don't mean stop giving time and energy to others. I mean that there has to be dedicated time every day to work on something that pushes you forward.

If you don't prioritize your time, someone else will.

Building a daily habit: 'that sounds like a chore'.

30 minutes daily writing: 'I can do that'.

Giving yourself a time allocation to work on the most important thing is the way to drive consistent progress. Small progress compounds. 30 minutes daily is all it takes.

1. Realize you can't do everything.

Time is your most precious resource. If you are spreading that time across too many things you will make little progress.

You have to prioritize what matters most.

This means saying 'no' more often.

  • Is it in your priority list?

  • Does it advance a goal or something you are working on?

  • Does it bring you joy?

  • Is it with people you enjoy spending time with?

If something is not an absolute 'yes' it should be eliminated from your schedule. This means you will make greater progress on the things that are most important to you.

2. Focus on where you can have high impact.

What is your highest point of contribution?

That is the intersection of:

  • What you are passionate about

  • What you are good at

  • What people want

The hardest piece of this puzzle is the market. What do people really want that fits within your passion and skillset?

Start sharing with the world. Create actionable content. Engage with others. Gather feedback.

Watch the data:

  • What gets engagement?

  • What questions do you get asked?

  • What is resonating with people?

Be data driven in understanding what your audience want and need.

This is how you turn what you love into your highest point of contribution.

Spend your efforts where you have greatest impact.

3. List actions you can take to achieve your goals.

Start your road to success with a list. Simple yet effective.

What a list should not look like:

  • Write a book

  • Start a podcast

  • Grow an audience online

This will create inaction. Every item is too big, not specific, and it is unclear what you need to do next.

When it comes to taking action, clarity is king.

What your list should look like:

  • Write for 30 minutes on [topic of your choice]

  • Host a Twitter Spaces discussion on [topic of your choice]

  • Post a piece of content on [topic of your choice]

  • Send 2 DMs to people who engaged with your content.

Be very clear on the next specific step you need to take. This removes friction in your process. It reduces procrastination. This is how you turn 30 minutes a day into outcomes, products, and success.

Actionable takeaways:

  • Schedule time daily when you can work on something that advances your goal.

  • Prioritize what matters most to you. Don't be afraid to say 'no' to people, or opportunities that create distractions from what you want to be doing.

  • Find your highest point of contribution. Spend time collecting data, and using that information to understand what your audience want.

  • Make your lists clear and specific. This will help you turn an idea into reality, one step at a time.
